In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an advanced assisted reproductive technology designed to help individuals and couples overcome infertility challenges and achieve pregnancy. This procedure involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting, then transferring the resulting embryo(s) into the uterus for implantation.

Who Is IVF Suitable For?

IVF is recommended for patients experiencing:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

  • Male infertility factors such as low sperm count or motility

  • Endometriosis or unexplained infertility

  • Failed previous fertility treatments such as ovulation induction or intrauterine insemination (IUI)

  • Age-related fertility decline

Comprehensive fertility assessments help determine if IVF is the best option for each patient.

Different IVF Methods

  • Conventional IVF: In this standard method, eggs and sperm are placed together in a petri dish allowing fertilization to occur naturally. It’s generally used when sperm quality is normal.

  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): This method involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg to achieve fertilization. ICSI is preferred in cases of male infertility such as low sperm count, poor motility, or previous fertilization failures.

  • Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET): Embryos created during a prior IVF cycle are frozen and later thawed to be transferred to the uterus. FET is often used to preserve embryos or when multiple embryo transfers are planned.

  • Blastocyst Transfer: Embryos are cultured longer, usually 5 days, to reach the blastocyst stage before transfer, which can improve implantation rates.

Difference Between IVF and ICSI

While both IVF and ICSI are fertility treatments involving fertilization outside the body, the key difference lies in the fertilization step:

  • IVF allows sperm to fertilize the egg naturally in a lab dish. It is suitable when sperm quality is good.

  • ICSI involves the direct injection of a single sperm into the egg, bypassing some natural barriers. This technique is ideal for severe male infertility or when fertilization failed in previous IVF attempts.

The IVF Process

  1. Ovarian Stimulation: Fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

  2. Egg Retrieval: Using a minimally invasive ultrasound-guided procedure, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries.

  3. Fertilization: Depending on sperm quality and clinical indication, fertilization occurs either by conventional IVF or ICSI.

  4. Embryo Culture: Fertilized eggs develop into embryos over 3 to 5 days under controlled conditions.

  5. Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus to achieve pregnancy.

  6. Pregnancy Test: Approximately two weeks after transfer, a blood test confirms whether implantation and pregnancy have occurred.

Success Rates

IVF success rates depend on various factors including age, cause of infertility, and clinic expertise. On average:

  • Women under 35 have a 40–50% chance of pregnancy per IVF cycle

  • Success rates gradually decline with age but advanced techniques continue to improve outcomes

Post-Treatment Care

  • Patients are advised to rest for a few days following embryo transfer.

  • Hormonal support such as progesterone supplements is often prescribed to support implantation.

  • Regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds ensures pregnancy progression.

  • Emotional support and counseling are recommended due to the psychological impact of fertility treatments.

Benefits of IVF

  • Provides hope and opportunity for individuals and couples who struggle with infertility.

  • Allows for genetic screening to reduce the risk of hereditary diseases.

  • Enables patients to plan and time pregnancy according to personal circumstances.

  • Offers the possibility to use donor eggs or sperm if needed.

  • Advances in technology have increased the chance of success and minimized complications.
